Meet Dr. Janice Duong
“I love what I do. Being able to help people in some way, even in the smallest way, has made this job extremely fulfilling. But working with and being able to help kids has made this fulfilling job not only rewarding but also enjoyable and FUN! I love seeing all their personalities, listening to their stories, and watching them grow. But what gives me the warm fuzzies and the most pride is when I see them overcome their fears or when I see them get through treatment that even grown adults have a hard time completing. It makes me so proud of them and it's the best feeling seeing how proud they are of themselves—as they should be! This is what keeps me going to work and loving what I do.” – Dr. Janice
Dr. Janice obtained her Doctor of Dental Medicine degree at the University of British Columbia where she was selected as the dental school President and then the class Valedictorian for her graduating class. Following graduation, she practiced general dentistry in the Lower Mainland for two years before proceeding to the University of Washington/Seattle Children’s Hospital, where she was selected as the Chief Resident and obtained her Pediatric Dentistry Specialty diploma and her Master of Science degree in Dentistry.
A board-certified Fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada (FRCDC) in Pediatric Dentistry, as well as a board-certified Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry, Dr. Janice feels strongly about continuing education and staying abreast of the best evidence-based practices in pediatric dentistry in order to provide her little patients with the best possible treatment and in the safest and most child-friendly way.
She is also a member of the BC Dental Association, BC Society of Pediatric Dentistry (past president), Canadian Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, Western Society of Pediatric Dentistry, and the College of Diplomates of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry.
Dr. Janice is also highly involved within the dental community. She is a part-time affiliated clinical faculty member at the University of Washington’s Center for Pediatric Dentistry and a clinical instructor for the pediatric dental residents and pre-doctoral dental students both at the University of Washington and at UBC. She was previously awarded the Part-time Faculty Teaching Award at UBC.
Her commitment to pediatric oral health has taken her to the Yukon and Northwest Territories of Canada where she had provided dental work for these communities on a monthly basis for several years. She has also enjoyed volunteering abroad in dental mission trips to schools, orphanages, and hospitals in Peru, Cambodia, and Kenya.
Outside of the office, Dr. Janice enjoys trying different foods, travel, art, music, and dance, especially having grown up with extensive training in piano and ballet. She also enjoys spending time with her close friends and family, especially with her husband and two children. Dr. Janice is a native of BC and loves everything that the west coast, and the Surrey community in particular, has to offer.
